According to the Counterpoint report, over 100 million smartphones with MediaTek chipsets were sold during Q3 2020. The chipmaker MediaTek grew by 5% and Qualcomm got 2% growth compared to Q3 2019. MediaTek is believed to have leveraged the growth of Huawei due to the US. Ahead of the band, Huawei purchased a significant amount of chipsets. All these factors benefitted MediaTek to take the market lead.
Qualcomm on the other hand becomes the biggest 5G chipset vendor with a 39 market share in the same quarter (Q3 2020). The chip vendor posted a good growth as compared to its last year’s report. MediaTek has become the first choice for most of the smartphone manufacturers for the affordable category but faces competition from Qualcomm in the mid to high ranging smartphones.
Counterpoint Research Director Dale Gai says, “MediaTek’s strong market share gain in Q3 2020 happened due to three reasons – strong performance in the mid-end smartphone price segment ($100 – $250) and emerging markets like LATAM and MEA, the US ban on Huawei and finally wins in leading OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor.” [source]
